Executive Officer - The Garvan Institute of Medical Research

 

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Garvan) is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes, with over 600 scientists, students and support staff.  Its mission is to make significant contributions to medical research that will change the directions of science and medicine and have major impacts on human health.

The Garvan pioneers study into the most widespread diseases affecting our community, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and mental disorders, disorders of the immune system, diabetes and obesity, osteoporosis and other skeletal disorders. The Institute has a major emphasis on clinical and research genomics, advanced imaging and bioinformatics, in the conviction that big data and machine learning will transform not only medical research, but also medicine and healthcare.

The Executive Director of the Institute builds upon the strength of the Institute’s staff to realise this mission by cultivating an environment of scientific excellence, creativity, integrity, innovation and collaboration, via local, regional and global partnerships.

The opportunity

The Institute is currently seeking to appoint an Executive Officer to provide high-level support to the Executive Director of Garvan in order to achieve the strategic and operational objectives of the Institute.  The Executive Officer’s role is to work closely with and support the Executive Director in the pursuit of these objectives.  

Duties and responsibilities

  • Record, summarise, follow up and execute actions arising from meetings;
  • Prepare reports and submissions;
  • Develop presentations and documentation for internal and external meetings;
  • Liaise with government, universities, medical research institutes, CSIRO and other research organisations nationally and internationally, hospitals and health delivery organisations, as well as insurers, industry and community organisations, among others, in the development and achievement of shared objectives; and
  • Fulfil other executive and administrative functions that may be required from time-to-time.

Knowledge, skills and experience required

The position requires high-level qualifications, at least tertiary education, and preferably a PhD with experience in the biomedical arena. Broader experience in other fields of activity, for example, industry, government, the arts or law, would be an advantage. 

The position also requires outstanding interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, excellent writing skills, excellent organisational skills (including time management and networking skills, attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, etc.), the ability to think strategically, and the ability to interact in a sophisticated and sensitive manner with a wide range of internal and external parties, including senior management.

It also requires a charming team player with a flexible approach and willingness to work across boundaries to achieve productive outcomes.
