A Parliamentary Inquiry says some non-metro students are struggling to find the beat, with poor access to music education recorded in Victoria.

The government probe found rural and regional students do not have the same access as their city-dwelling counterparts, and the gap is made wider for students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

The Victorian Education and Training Committee looked at the accessibility and impact of music training in the state.

The Committee has recommended a state-wide strategy for music education be developed, and implemented with government backing. It also found further musical education for teachers could be beneficial too, possibly enabled by technological means.

The inquiry found new legislation may help ensure schools have the equipment and facilities to encourage musically-minded students.

The Victorian government is expected to respond within six months.
