About the Role 

We are seeking a Research Associate with strong Bayesian skills to contribute to the Cooperative Research Centre for Solving Antimicrobial Resistance in Agribusiness, Food, and Environments (CRC SAAFE), bringing together forward-thinking industries with leading research organisations and government agencies. We are committed to protecting Australia’s food and agribusiness industries, and the environments in which they operate, from the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

You will conduct research inspired by real world challenges for a number of academic and industry focussed research projects, in particular contributing to research projects in support of Prof. Nicholas Ashbolt, the Peter Teasdale Chair in Environmental Health Risk Assessment.

Core Responsibilities 

  • Conduct high-quality research project independently or under limited supervision and in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders
  • Design, perform and record experimental work
  • Independently or under limited supervision, communicate research outcomes in both verbal and written form including presentations and reports to the research team
  • Ensure delivery of project’s research milestones, objectives and work programs are met on time, within budget and to the industry partner’s satisfaction
  • Develop a record of independent research that results in high-quality publications
  • Provide advice to postgraduate students, international internship students and visiting students in the appointee’s area of expertise
  • Make significant contributions to refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers arising from the research
  • Contribute to the teaching activities of the University, in a manner to be determined on a case-by-case basis


Essential Skills and Experience 

  • A PhD qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated research productivity in modelling microbial and/or chemical risks 
  • Ability to apply Bayesian approaches to describe causal links and management options for antimicrobial resistance across multi-sector environments
  • Evidence of participation in external activities such as industry or community engagement relevant to environmental risk assessments
  • Record of independent research resulting in high-quality publications and evidence of growing citation impact
  • Growing profile in research supervision and leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight work schedules, including effective organisational skills in prioritising to meet deadlines often with competing demands


Highly Regarded Skills

  • Experience with Bayesian statistics (such as Bayesian hierarchical modelling using R) and/or in developing Bayes Nets (to interpret influence diagrams)
  • Experience in quantitative risk assessment relevant to environmental management
  • Professional experience with industry (across environmental, agribusiness or food sectors)
  • A record of obtaining research income
  • Experience with public or industry engagements (e.g., focus group solicitations)
