The University of Tasmania (UTAS) has secured $27 million in research funding for two major projects.

The University has received the funding for two collaborative research through the Industrial Transformation Research Funding Scheme.

The two that have received funding are:

  • A rock lobster project through the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), with a total value of $16.9m.
  • A “Pathways to Market” initiative within the world-leading Sense-T project, with a total value of $10.1m.

State Minister for Science and Technology, David O’Byrne, said that funding for the two projects is crucial for a major player in the Tasmanian economy.

“This funding boost is a huge win for the University of Tasmania, and a shot in the arm for the Tasmanian science and research sector generally,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“UTAS’s success in obtaining significant funding for collaborative research is a clear indication of the quality and importance of the work here in Tasmania.

“Science research and innovation is critical to Tasmania’s economy.

“As an industry sector, it contributes $350 million every year, and employs over three thousand Tasmanians.”
