Victoria's oldest families have visited the state’s Parliament House for groundbreaking treaty negotiations.

Traditional owners came with a mission to address the intergenerational trauma of colonisation through a statewide treaty with Victoria.

The First Peoples' Assembly is in charge of this transformative journey. Central to their vision is restoring power to Aboriginal communities for self-governance, from law and order to education and health.

Newly elected co-chairs - Wamba Wamba, Yorta Yorta, Dhudhuroa and Dja Dja Wurrung woman Ngarra Murray and Gunditjmara man Rueben Berg - envision a future where Indigenous cultures thrive, and their communities reclaim control of their lives, lands, and waters.

Victoria's progress towards a treaty has earned bipartisan support, but it is still to be seen how far the government will go in devolving decision-making power.
