One hundred and fifty important programs have had their funding renewed, as the Federal Government pours $170 million into mental health services.

The funding has been coupled with the launch of a national Review of Mental Health Services and Programmes.

The focus of the review will be the efficiency and effectiveness of programmes and services in supporting Australians with mental health issues.

The inquiry, to be conducted by the Mental Health Commission, is now open for submissions.

Authorities have asked all interested parties to lodge their views on fixing service gaps, duplication, inefficiency, unnecessary red tape and resolutions.

“It is essential to ensure the continuity for mental health services, suicide prevention and postvention programmes while the National Mental Health Commission undertakes its review of all existing services,” Minister for Health Peter Dutton said.

“People who experience mental ill health need to know that services are available to support them.”

Mr Dutton said future decisions on how the Australian Government should fund mental health programmes will be informed by the Commission’s review.

He also claimed it would ensure that services are being properly targeted and that funding is going to programmes that have proven effective.

Information on the review can be found on the National Mental Health Commission website.
