Macquarie University has announced plans to cut 70 jobs from its payroll due to dwindling international enrolments for 2012 semesters.

Although Macquarie’s financial health remains stable, the expected drop off in international enrolments is a cause of concern for the university.

"These are not deep cuts to the organisation but will allow necessary readjustment in line with what is happening in the current international market," Human resources director Tim Sprague told staff in a letter.

The announcement by Macquarie comes as education provider Navitas announced its confidence in the higher education sector, saying that the drop off in international student enrolments was not cause for concern but rather represented a departure of those seeking an education-sponsored visa.
