A digital identity expert says plans for the myGovID app will not work without an overhaul.

Stephen Wilson, renowned for his digital identity expertise and the founder of Lockstep consulting firm, says significant upgrades are needed for the realisation of a user-friendly national digital ID system and its associated smart wallet, set to launch next year.

He says that the current myGovID platform was designed solely for streamlining access to government services, but the planned integration of a sophisticated smart wallet will require substantial modernisation.

Wilson said that the existing myGovID system - despite catering to over 10 million users - falls short of the advanced encryption standards set by tech giants like Apple and Google.
