The Central Queensland University (CQU) has announced it will shut down its Gold Coast campus, citing growing competition and a precipitous decline in international student numbers.

A spokesman for the university said the campus would stop operating at the end of 2014 following a gradual wind down of operations.

The university released a statement saying that the gradual wind down would allow the majority of students to complete their studies before closure.

The announcement comes after the campus experienced a 60 per cent drop off in international student enrolments over the past year.

The university announced it will focus on its Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne campuses to further build its undergraduate base.
