The Katharina Gaus Light Microscopy Facility (KGLMF) is a multi-user facility within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) in the Division of Research at UNSW. The facility provides researchers with a comprehensive suite of advanced light and optical instrumentation and associated expertise. The facility supports and collaborates with various research groups in the Faculties of Science, Medicine and Engineering at UNSW and groups at other universities and research institutes in Australia and overseas.
A Research Officer plays a key role in supporting research projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers in the Katharina Gaus Light Microscopy Facility (KGLMF).
The position will provide technical and research assistance to students and researchers in activities associated with various research projects, including the contribution and application of knowledge in the field of Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy to a range of projects conducted within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre
The role reports to the Head of the KGLMF and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities
- Provision of practical and efficient support to research stakeholders, assisting in the conduct of research utilising live imaging, slide scanning, confocal microscopy, clearing and light-sheet microscopy, including experiment design, acquisition, data processing and interpretation.
- Support in the conceptualisation, design, and successful conduct of projects requiring expertise in image analysis and sample preparation.
- Prepare and contribute to the production of technical reports, manuscripts for publication and tenders or grants for external funding.
- Proactively assist with research reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and progress reports.
- Monitor research protocols, provide problem solving and resolution to any evolving problems related to design, implementation, and analysis of light microscopy projects.
- Liaise with organisations, data custodians, stakeholders and collaborators and actively participate in meetings and discussions as required.
- Coordinate, plan, and complete day-to-day research activities within the framework of agreed project timelines and responsibilities.
- Train users on KGLMF instrumentation to ensure competency and correct data collection of their samples.
- Contribute to the maintenance, troubleshooting and development of KGLMF instruments.
Skills and Experience
- A university degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Medical Sciences or related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training, or experience.
- At least 2 years of experience with either live imaging and/or confocal microscopy.
- Demonstrated capacity to advise, support, and train researchers and students conducting projects using basic and advanced microscopy techniques e.g. live cell imaging, confocal microscopy, and Light sheet imaging.
- Demonstrated capacity in sample processing and preparation for immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry and histology staining or sample-clearing techniques.
- Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design, and planning as involved in developing research projects using advanced fluorescence microscopy and reporting against milestones.
- Capacity to successfully work with large imaging data sets, through data visualisation and analysis pipelines.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
