About Us
The Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) at Western Sydney University (WSU) carries out research on the transformations in culture and society in the context of contemporary global change. It operates as a leading international centre for interdisciplinary, engaged and collaborative scholarship in the humanities and social sciences for a digital age. The ICS hosts the Western Sydney University node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, (ADM+S) (https://www.admscentre.org.au) which is a cross-disciplinary and national research centre, that aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making.
The Centre of Excellence brings together leading researchers in the humanities, social and technological sciences in an international industry, research and civil society network. Its priority domains for public engagement are news and media, transport, social services, and health. The Centre of Excellence for ADM+S has four Research Programs: Data, Institutions, Machines and People and four Focus Areas: Digital Health, Mobility and Transport, News and Information, and Social Services.
The Opportunity
The Institute for Culture and Society is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Research Fellow to join the team. You will contribute to the Centre of Excellence signature project “Language and Cultural Diversity in ADM: Australia in the Asia Pacific” in the ARC Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S).

The Research Fellow will develop, conduct and manage primary ethnographic research in the Asia-Pacific region on linguistic and cultural diversity in ADM. You will complement the capacity of the node at WSU to engage with and contribute to understanding innovation and change in this emergent area. In this role you will assist in coordinating all aspects of the research project, including planning, data management, financial oversight, and project documentation.
The Research Fellow will also contribute to projects that develop greater understanding of the landscapes of ADM across the Asia-Pacific region. You will draw upon your linguistic, cultural, and ethnographic expertise to understand the everyday dimensions of ADM in specific local, national, or transnational settings while participating in comparative research and publications with other members of the CoE and node. Projects may involve engagement with communities, NGOs, industry, government and other stakeholders who are shaping the practice of ADM. Potential project include: AgriTech (automation technologies for agriculture and food production), AI tools for language learning and translation, chatbots and other mundane forms of ADM, creative and cultural industries, disaster response and recovery, FinTech and digital financial services, infrastructures and networks, migration and mobility or other areas relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interests. Projects that employ a decolonial or decentred approach are welcome.
This is a full-time, fixed-term opportunity for 3 years based at Parramatta South Campus, although travel to other campuses and locations may be required.

About You
We are looking for a motivated individual with a Doctorate in a relevant discipline such as Anthropology, Human Geography, or related fields, awarded within the past five years. You will have strong linguistic, cultural, and ethnographic expertise, particularly in the context of ADM. The ideal candidate will have experience in conducting ethnographic research and field work, have a track record of publications, with the ability to communicate and engage with diverse stakeholders.

Remuneration Package: Academic Level B $135,528 to $159,922 p.a. (comprising Salary of $114,523 to $135,230 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading)
