CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this position you will undertake research on advancing quantum annealing and other quantum computing techniques and algorithms for applications in materials and process related modelling and optimisation. Quantum annealing is a type of quantum computing that is already finding practical application. The research will focus on topics including improving quantum computational efficiency, solving large problems, and applying quantum annealing and potentially gate-model quantum computing to high-impact applications. You will be working with a multidisciplinary team of experts in quantum computing, computational modelling and materials science and engineering, based at CSIRO Manufacturing in Clayton, Victoria. This fellowship will also provide the opportunity to collaborate with researchers associated with CSIRO’s Quantum Technologies Future Science Platform and our university and industrial partners. 

Your duties will include:

• Developing novel approaches that improve the efficiency of quantum annealing and potentially gate-model quantum computing in solving large optimisation problems.
• Identifying and developing new applications of quantum computing, for example, in materials modelling or image analysis.
• Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes. 
• Recognising and exploit opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
• Utilising design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals, and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects.

Salary:  AU$92k - AU$101k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as physics, applied mathematics, computer science, operations research, materials science. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
• Demonstrated ability to apply mathematical and/or computational approaches to solve complex physical or materials science problems.
• Demonstrated ability to apply numerical techniques to solve complex R&D problems.
• High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.

Eligibility
