The Education Minister says Australian schools will be provided with information on consent, respectful relationships and sexual abuse.

There has been a strong call for more information about consent to be distributed in Australian schools after a former student at an elite Sydney private school began a petition that has since gathered thousands of stories of abuse and assault at local institutions.

Federal Education Minister Alan Tudge says he has heard the call.

"I've got to say I've been quite shocked at the extent of the number of people who are coming forward," Mr Tudge told Sky News this week.

The Federal Government is reportedly preparing to distribute Respect Matters - the Coalition government’s suite of education materials first put together in 2019 - to schools nationwide.

“This is an issue for the entire community to do better at,” Mr Tudge said.

However, while Mr Tudge is urging the community to do better at dealing with matters of sexual violence and consent, the Federal Government he belongs to does not appear to be listening.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison continues to resist calls to launch an independent inquiry into rape allegations against Attorney-General Christian Porter, which date from when he was at high school.
