Creating a brighter future for life in the Tropics and beyond, through education and research that makes a difference locally, and globally, James Cook University (JCU) now has an exciting opportunity for a Research Officer/Senior Research Officer, Embedded System Developer, to join our team in the College of Science and Engineering. The position is full-time and fixed term to May 2024 and can be based at either the Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas or the Cairns Nguma-bade campus, Smithfield. Remuneration at either Academic Level A $ 69,717 - $93,159 or Academic Level B $97,856 - $115,465 per annum plus up to 17% employer superannuation contributions. Level of appointment and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

What you can accomplish in the Role

Joining a dynamic team of academics and researchers, you will be responsible for researching and developing electronic devices for applications in agriculture. This includes developing the Internet of Things (IoT) devices for monitoring irrigation events on a sugarcane farm (water flow, level, presence etc.). The role will also require some microcontroller and telecommunication software development.

What you will bring to the Role

You will hold a degree or higher qualification in electronics engineering or a related field with prior experience in embedded systems hardware design, or a combination or relevant skills and training. You will have a proven ability to design, test and iteratively improve embedded systems hardware with an ability to design battery powered sensor devices with radio communications.
