The Role

In this newly created role, the Program Manager will lead a team of project specialists and managers in developing and delivering a suite of innovative and highly specialised astronomical instrumentation projects for major international telescopes and industrial partners.

The Program Manager will be responsible for:

Driving best practice in the delivery and oversight of large-scale long-term instrumentation projects including project management methodology, systems engineering, quality control, and risk management
Building and managing relationships with clients, internal and external stakeholders including managing high value and/or high risk contracts with clients or vendors
Developing business cases for resources, operational improvements, facilities, and infrastructure to enhance operations and ensure AAO-Macquarie is at the forefront of innovation and technology application
Overseeing and managing the resource allocation matrix and the process of allocating staff to projects, and monitoring and reporting on this allocation
Promoting a culture of excellence and outstanding service across the technical team

About You

You will have extensive industry experience in delivering high precision and bespoke technical or scientific projects and have worked across a number of project and engineering methodologies. You will have experience in a matrixed resource allocation approach and be adaptive and flexible in delivering to stakeholder expectations and project deadlines.

To be successful in this role, you will be an engaging and trusted leader with a strong track record of developing capability and building high performing teams. You will have a proven ability to build and maintain multi-disciplinary project teams across function boundaries and high level communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.

• A Bachelors Degree in physics, engineering or a relevant discipline and substantial relevant experience in technical project management
• A strong track record of successfully managing high value technical projects involving complex situations and effectively navigating through unanticipated obstacles to deliver on time, to specification and within budget
• A demonstrated inclusive and collaborative management and communication style with strong interpersonal skills and ability to exercise influence and make critical business decisions
• Sound experience implementing a strong Health and Safety culture in a complex and highly technical laboratory environment
• Knowledge and experience of systems engineering practices
• Knowledge and experience in resource and team management
• Knowledge and experience in astronomical or scientific instrumentation (desirable)
• A demonstrated commitment to promoting and advancing principles of equity, inclusion and diversity in STEMM workplaces
