The Role

In its 2017 Naval Shipbuilding Plan, the Australian Government made clear that a skilled workforce is critical to the success of the National Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise. As the largest capital investment ever undertaken in Australia, the National Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise represents an entirely new direction in the way Australia underpins its national security interests. We are offering two exciting roles within Defence Science and Technology Group in STEM Outreach and Engagement. In these roles, you will help us build the Defence Science & Technology (S&T) workforce through nurturing the next generation to seek careers in science and technology and supporting the Chief Defence Scientist in the responsibility of building Defence S&T shipbuilding workforce capability .

About our Team
The Science Engagement and Impact Division (SEID) is responsible for strategically positioning DSTG to deliver maximum impact for Defence. The division co-ordinates and develops DSTGs external engagements and leads the development of science policy, the formulation of strategic research programs, and the investment of resources into DSTGs science and technology capabilities. The division also develops our highly skilled and collaborative workforce, recognising diversity in partnerships and building a shared culture.

Workforce Capability and Talent (WCT) Branch within SEID is responsible for building Defence capability through the strategic management of the Defence S&T workforce. WCT ensures there is a strong, diverse pipeline to meet the future workforce demand for Defence science and technology through planning workforce capability, partnering to raise the profile of STEM, engaging with talent pools and developing sustainable talent management strategies.

We also lead the implementation of the Brilliant People, Collaborative Culture pillar of the More, Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy 2030 which focusses on developing a highly skilled and collaborative workforce that recognises diversity in partnerships and builds a shared culture.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidates will be great communicators, who act with purpose to help shape innovation, science and technology within Defence and across the eco-system. You will be adept at using and presenting information to inform data driven decisions and enjoy a fast paced, agile environment. You will be a team player who is open to consulting with a range of stakeholders and teams to seek diversity of thought and new ideas. You will be inclusive to deliver progressive, pragmatic solutions for the Defence S&T eco-system.

The ideal candidates for these roles will have a well-developed understanding of the STEM ecosystem across Australia, with a focus on education including the tertiary sector and a proven ability to liaise and collaborate with schools and other relevant institutions and industry bodies.

An ability to collaborate, influence and build a strong rapport with a range of stakeholders to effectively facilitate delivery of cross-organisational programs is key to this role. Strong communication skills, with the ability to strategically communicate to a wide range of audiences using multiple mediums will be required.

You will have strong capabilities in program management, with demonstrated experience in working with a small team to achieve results within defined timeframes. The ability to perform analysis, identifying requirements and determining appropriate courses of action to meet organisational needs.

The ideal candidates will have a qualification, or equivalent experience, in science, technology and/or engineering, science communication, STEM education or equivalent experience with STEM outreach and engagement.

We will be creating a merit pool to fill any similar ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies over the next 12 months.
