Postdoctoral Fellowship Coral Reef Restoration

About AIMS
The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. We do marine science that has practical benefit to the real world, providing high quality, large-scale and long-term research that is used by governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas.

AIMS researchers at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to the best tools and equipment like the National Sea Simulator, cutting edge laboratories and our fleet of research vessels.

About this Opportunity
The reef restoration research project will investigate the drivers of early survival and growth of a range of coral species across reef habitats and environments on the Great Barrier Reef. The project will deliver fundamental and applied ecological knowledge to evaluate, develop and test tools for coral restoration.

You will conduct research to improve understanding of the biological and environmental drivers influencing post settlement survival and will test and develop methods to improve this trait for reef restoration and adaptation. You will take a hands-on role in aquarium and field-based experiments and will conduct high quality statistical analysis of quantitative and ecological data. You will also play a leading role in the communication, education and outreach activities of the project and will present scientific findings through the production of scientific reports, papers and presentations.

Apply now and join a world leading organisation with attractive working conditions. The successful candidate will be rewarded with:

  • AOF Level 4 Salary ($82,632 – $94,034 per annum)
  • 15.4% superannuation
  • Generous leave provisions
  • Full-time 3 year opportunity
  • Located in Townsville, Queensland

About You
You will have strong experience in experimental design and the quantitative and statistical analysis of ecological data and be able to demonstrate:

  • PhD in marine biology or ecology, or a relevant discipline with strong knowledge of coral reproductive biology, coral propagation and/or coral reef ecology;
  • Well-developed communications skills and success in multidisciplinary collaboration with experience presenting scientific findings in publications, reports and presentations;
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working partnerships with Traditional Owner groups; and
  • Experience undertaking diving and boat related activities with the ability to plan and undertake field work in remote locations.
