About the Role
We seek an enthusiastic and motivated Research Assistant/Officer for our Atherothrombosis & Vascular laboratory. The work of the Atherothrombosis and Vascular lab focuses on thrombosis, atherosclerosis and inflammation and includes methodologies such as biotechnology (including production of recombinant proteins), molecular imaging (with various imaging technologies such as ultrasound, PET, CT, MRI, fluorescence imaging and intravital microscopy), flow cytometry, and various animal models of thrombosis, atherosclerosis and inflammatory diseases. The laboratory’s projects have all a strong translational focus.
Duties
In this role you will be expected to:
- Design, execute and control a laboratory research project or a portion of a research study in the health sciences
- Assist in the writing of grant proposals and the acquisition of support from outside agencies
- Coordinate the development of new and/or revised research methodologies
- Co-supervision, or where appropriate supervision, of major honours or post-graduate research projects in field of expertise.
- Perform independent critical analyses of pertinent literature.
- Prepare research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences and workshops, and write project reports, articles, and other documents.
- Plan and coordinate the conduct of experimental tests and plan the processing and analysis of research data obtained; and conduct staff conferences related to the progress of the project(s).
- Establish test controls, criteria and research standards and assist in the design of research experiments to define scientific systems problems; and provide technician assistance and supervision in equipment design, construction, modification, and maintenance
Skills and Experience
You will have:
- PhD degree in science (or be about to submit)
- Academic knowledge of a health science discipline, such as public health, microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy, pathology, nursing, dental hygiene or medical technology, plus the ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge
- Research experience in histology and animal work would be most advantageous
- Research experience in flow cytometry, bio- and nanotechnology would be welcome
