Centre for Inflammation, Faculty of Science

Come and join the Centre for Inflammation (the Centre). The first initiative joint programme between the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Centenary Institute (CI). We are a fast moving, hard working group, thriving on building our research projects (which include many collaborative opportunities), HDR/PhD student projects, training and development and grant writing! Who doesn't love applying for grants you may never get! But don't fear, we are well supported. We already have the best lab manager (and yes, she did write this ad), a project co-ordinator, 2 technical officers and 4 research assistants (let's not mention the 12 other post-docs and 13 PhD students just yet). And we are still growing! But don't get too excited. This is a hands-on lab-based position and you will be expected to conduct your own experiments. But there's plenty of backup available!

The Centre can offer the right candidates the chance to build their research profile, and be known in the respiratory space!

There are 2-3 positions available for post docs. If you have any skills and knowledge in mouse models and/or translational human studies of chronic respiratory disease, why not give it a shot. Send in an application and we'll see how you stack up. If you know anything about bioinformatics, epigenetics, mitochondria/oxidative stress/immunometabolism, microbiome or exosomes studies of human and mouse tissues, even better. Tell us about this. We are also looking for people interested in industry work for our commercial studies. These roles will have a major emphasis on investigating novel therapeutic and preventative treatments for chronic lung disease and we have a strong desire to hire people who can take charge of collaborative projects. We have a steady supply of industry partners who need quick turn arounds for testing their novel treatments.

If you are wondering where we are, you will be located in Centenary Institute, Camperdown, Sydney. Which is pretty cool as there are many pubs/restaurants/cafes nearby, as well as the hospital (so far not needed by any employees, touch wood), and public transport is super easy to jump on and go anywhere. Less than 20 min bus ride to Central Station, and from there the world is your oyster! (well Sydney is anyway). 11mins to Darling Harbour or Circular Quay!

Now for the serious stuff. If you want to be part of this awesome team you will need:

  • Completion of Doctoral Degree (or submission of degree) in the field of respiratory research relevant to the Centre for Inflammation.
  • Experience in using standard research laboratory equipment (eg, BSCs, fume hoods, CO2 incubators, -80 freezers, centrifuges, plate readers, microscopes).
  • Experience in immunological, microbiological, molecular and cellular techniques.
  • Experience in handling mice (without getting bitten).
  • Experience in supervising students would be advantageous but not a deal breaker
  • Ability to independently plan and execute well-designed experiments
  • Ability to think laterally to trouble shoot without immediately annoying the lab manager.
  •
