Lecturer, Bachelor of Indigenous Languages and Linguistics 

 

Position overview

To participate in the preparation and delivery of the Bachelor of Indigenous Languages and Linguistics (WINLL) and other related courses through a mix of on-line, face-to-face, and workshop teaching and learning, as well as management of student progression and administration requirements. The role is expected to contribute to and/or lead research projects and engage in scholarship in the field of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Knowledges and Studies - one of the Institute's key research concentrations. This position requires experience in Higher Education course delivery as well as a PhD in General Linguistics. Other responsibilities include contributing to the management and operations of the Division.

Detailed statement of duties

1. Undertake ongoing development of course and subject curriculum including supporting resource materials.
2. Coordinate and conduct workshops, lectures, and student assessment, involving a range of teaching and learning activities in the WINLL, in partnership with Charles Darwin University (CDU).
3. Administrative tasks connected to teaching including maintaining student records, reporting on student progress, counseling students on academic matters, and documenting the teaching process.
4. Maintain the Institute's administrative procedures and policies, including those pertaining to the partnership between Batchelor Institute and CDU.
5. Attend and participate at School, Division, and Institute meetings as required.
6. Undertake research and scholarship activities and, where appropriate, supervise Higher Degree by Research candidates.

Essential selection criteria

1. A Doctorate in General Linguistics and substantial experience relevant to this position. In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard will be given to experience in teaching and research as well as to professional contributions to the field.
2. Demonstrated ability to work within the social, political and cultural environment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.
3. Proven ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including adult students and community members.
4. Demonstrated capacity to undertake course and unit coordination including developing curriculum and supporting resources relevant to Higher Education courses in Linguistics.
5. Experience in online teaching and a high level of competence in the use of personal computers, relevant software, and electronic communications technology.
6. Demonstrated capacity to respond effectively to the learning needs of adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in Higher Education courses.
7. An emerging research profile of publications/research projects and a demonstrated capacity to lead and/or support research and scholarship in the field of Indigenous languages/linguistics.
8. Proven ability to work effectively with others in culturally diverse teams, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision.

Desirable selection criteria

1        A track record in securing research and/or project grants.

2        Demonstrated ability to speak an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander language.

3        A record of successful supervision of Higher Degree by Research Candidates.
