Researcher/HDR Coordinator

 

Position Overview                                                                                                                                      

This position forms an integral part of the Institute’s research capacity building agenda and joins the Higher Education and Research Division leadership team in implementing the Batchelor Institute Research Plan. The successful applicant will be an active researcher in a field of research relevant to the Institute’s strategic research directions and have a sound knowledge and strong commitment to research ethics, research quality and research culture-building in an Indigenous research training context. The role requires an appreciation of Indigenous research paradigms and methodologies, experience in HDR candidate supervision and the ability to contribute to the development and delivery of research Master Classes for research candidates.

The position is focused on research and research training with the successful applicant being required to participate in the Institute’s research and academic governance and represent the Institute at relevant research networks and events. The successful applicant is expected to undertake joint HDR coordination duties up to 0.5 FTE and work cooperatively with research candidates, their supervisors and other support and service staff to ensure high levels of academic and administrative support.

Detailed Statement of Duties

Research leadership and management (0.5 FTE)

Work as part of a research development team to: 

  1. Develop and undertake research activities and attract competitive grant funding. Support colleagues and early career researchers to do the same.

    Maintain an active publication and conference profile and support staff, early career researchers and higher degree candidates to build publication and scholarship profiles. 

  2. Supervise Masters by Research and PhD candidates in FoRs aligned to the Institute research strategic directions and mentor early career researchers into supervisory roles. 

  3. Work collaboratively and strategically with institutional and discipline partners and within the Institute to increase research collaborations, outputs and profile. 

  4. Ensure quality research outcomes through open and accountable processes and demonstrate a commitment to research ethics and intellectual property protocols. 

  5. Contribute to the Batchelor Institute as a senior member of staff with particular focus on improving policies, practices and processes that relate to the Institute’s research, research ethics and higher degree student management. 

HDR Coordination(0.5 FTE) 

Work with a fellow 0.5 FTE HDR Coordinator and the research development team to: 

  1. Promote HDR awards and provide accurate information to prospective candidates and Institute peers on the program rules and requirements, scholarship opportunities, Institute resources and facilities. 

  2. Develop and update research training course materials, handbooks and forms, and policies and procedures pertaining to HDR awards. 

  3. Monitor and support the admission, enrolment, induction, progression and examination processes of HDR candidates. 

  4. Negotiate, facilitate and monitor supervisory arrangements for candidates and, where necessary, act as first point of mediation in candidate/supervisor problems. 

  5. Maintain regular contact with candidates, uphold accurate and comprehensive student records, provide regular HDR program reports and contribute to key Institute reports and submissions as required. 

Essential selection criteria 

  1. A PhD in a Field of Research aligned to the Institutes research directions (see Institute Research Plan 2012-2015)

  2. Track record in research grant success, scholarship and publication, and sound knowledge of research methodologies, including Indigenous research paradigms and methodologies. 

  3. Proven ability to inspire and guide Higher Degree by Research students to completion. 

  4. Effective and efficient administration and management competence, including the ability to schedule, establish priorities, work to deadlines, manage grants and multi tasks. 

  5. Demonstrated understanding of the National Statement of Ethical Research, and a high level of personal ethics particularly with respect to the processing of sensitive personal information. 

  6. Proven capacity to work effectively and cooperatively in culturally diverse teams and in cross-cultural contexts, preferably within the social, political and cultural environments of Australian Indigenous communities and organisations. 

  7. Demonstrated high level of interpersonal communication and consultation skills. 

  8. Demonstrated ability to represent the Institute at a range of forums, and to liaise, communicate, negotiate and collaborate with partners, stakeholders and students in order to deliver agreed services and outcomes.

Desirable selection criteria 

  1. An understanding of alternative research dissemination approaches and assessment processes applied in the Creative Arts area.

  2. Successful experience working with Indigenous Australians, especially post graduate research candidates

  3. Proficiency in the use of learning management systems, virtual classroom software, research data bases and information storage and retrieval systems.
