• Salary: $101,524 - $119,683 per year (plus 9.5% employer superannuation and leave loading)

UNSW Law is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work with Scientia Professor Ross Buckley and his Digital Financial Services research team (the Team) on his Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage project entitled “Regulating a Revolution: A New Regulatory Model for Digital Finance”.

The successful candidate will contribute towards the research effort of UNSW Law by undertaking research on the effective and enabling regulation of Digital Financial Services (DFS) in developed and developing nations.  This is a unique opportunity to contribute to research that has attracted considerable international attention and acclaim and be part of the only sizable team in the world researching the regulation of digital financial services. The Team’s Research Diagnostic Toolkit was one of the three finalists in the UNSW Innovation of the Year Award in 2016, and the only non-STEM project among finalists. The Team have to date worked extensively in Malawi, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands, and will shortly commence work in West Africa. The Team’s research findings are already reflected in the laws and regulatory approaches of a range of countries.

About the ARC project

The delivery of financial services over mobile phones has reduced poverty and promoted growth in some developing countries, yet failed to flourish in many. This project explores innovative approaches to enabling regulation in these nations. Working with the United Nations Capital Development Fund, local central banks and other regulators, this Team advises on the development of effective and enabling regulation. The work of the team enhances financial inclusion and the economic well-being of individuals, particularly those living in remote regions.

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research, including qualitative and empirical research; and
• A PhD in Law, economics, finance, political science or cognate area or equivalent research and/or professional experience (such as professional experience as a banking and finance lawyer).
