The Electron Microscope Unit is a central research and research training facility within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre. The EMU has 17 major instruments, a current staff of 11 and supports the research and research training of >450 researchers and research students each year. The unit is a one of the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Facility.

About the role

  • $67K-$84K plus (17% superannuation and leave loading)
  • Continuing
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The main purposes of the position are:

  • To provide technical support and training to users of the Electron Microscope Unit to ensure that high quality data is acquired.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day operation of transmission electron microscopes and focussed ion beam instruments and related techniques.
  • To work cooperatively and flexibly with other team members to ensure the efficient operation of the unit as a whole.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • A tertiary degree in physical or materials science with some work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in an electron microscopy laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of TEM and FIB techniques and in associated specimen preparation techniques.
  • Ability to adapt procedures to a diverse range of specimen types.
  • Ability to use initiative in solving technical problems (eg. instrument faults) and adapt procedures if required.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise with students and staff at all levels and with external users.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in using scientific software packages and the ability to learn new systems.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
