The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI) (www.victorchang.edu.au), located in Darlinghurst, Sydney, Australia, is internationally regarded for excellence in cardiovascular research, with a major focus on molecules and mechanisms. The Institute is adjacent to Australia’s leading heart hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, is a University of NSW affiliated institute, and is a member of the St. Vincent’s Healthcare Campus that also includes the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the St. Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research.

The Role

Professor Robert M. Graham, Executive Director of the VCCRI and Head, Molecular Cardiology and Biophysics Division, is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant with expertise in cell and molecular biology. In this role you will drive an exciting new project to understand the cellular phenotype of patients with Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, a potentially fatal but under-diagnosed condition that predominantly affects women. You will be involved in day-to-day studies of fibroblasts cultured from these patients, as well the induction of induced pluripotent cells (iPSCs) and their differentiation into various blood vessel lineages. You will also assist in the preparation of DNA from cells for genome studies.

Skills Required

Applicants must hold a BSc ± Hons, a MSc or equivalent. Prior in-depth experience in cell culture and associated techniques is required. The candidate will be working within a larger group evaluating other related aspects of cardiac and vascular biology at the cellular and molecular level.

The position is available immediately and is funded via support from a National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia, Program Grant and a Leducq Foundation Transatlantic Networks of Excellence Award.
