Advanced Training in Public Health Medicine provides trainees with experience in the practice of public health medicine in appropriately supervised and supported environments. Trainees acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes of a public health physician by completing, with guidance from regional education coordinators, supervisors, and mentors, placement in a variety of public health activities.

The Burnet Institute will provide a highly innovative public health training program that will complement more traditional models of public health training occurring elsewhere in Australia.  The training program will ensure our trainees become future leaders in the field of public health.

This training will equip advanced trainees in a broad range of competencies required by all public health physicians and provide them with the opportunity to conduct project work and research that directly impacts the health of Australians and people in our region who have the greatest needs. Burnet staff work in a variety of settings, including clinics, laboratories, and community outreach in both Australia and some of the poorest countries in the Asia and Pacific regions.

Our public health practice encompasses translational and operational research, public health program design and implementation, policy development, and teaching and capacity development. Our staff includes Fellows of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Fellows of Royal Australasian College of Physicians, as well as staff with considerable experience in the teaching and mentoring of students more broadly including directs supervision of post graduate degrees and running and teaching various post graduate courses such the Master of Public Health. As such, the Institute can provide a balanced range of effectively supervised and supported training opportunities to ensure that service and training needs are met.

The training program consists of four key rotations:

  1. Management of Complex Chronic Disease in a Community Setting
  2. Indigenous Health and Health Practice in Remote Communities
  3. Surveillance and Public Health Program Evaluation
  4. Public Health Research

The specific structure of the Trainees program will be modified depending on the trainee’s interests, current projects within the Centre for Population Health and the requirements of the AFPHM Advanced Training Program.

In addition programs for students within the Centre for Population Health that aim to develop to learning specific technical skills from their rotations, trainees will have the opportunity to be involved in training highly-skilled, articulate, clear-thinking, well-rounded public health specialist and researchers primed to become leaders in their fields and who draw deep satisfaction from ongoing scholarship and the translation of their scholarship into public health practice.
