The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science or statistics?
  • Do you want to conduct innovative research with a leading research organisation?
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Geophysical Fluids team to conduct research on "Causal inference in high-dimensional multi-scale systems". The CERC Fellow will work closely with senior researchers from Data61 and Environment Business Unit to develop novel methodologies for feature selection, causal inference and prediction, combining optimization and time series analysis methods with Bayesian machine learning in computationally efficient frameworks.

The fellow will research, design, develop and apply new algorithms for causal inference to infer the impact of changes to the physical climate system on the wider socio-economic and security domains. This research will address challenges concerning uncertainty quantification and propagation of climate risks associated with implementation of particular emissions pathways via integration and implementation of time series analysis and optimization methods with machine learning. It is expected that the solutions developed by the fellow will directly contribute to ClimRISK: an integrated software platform for modelling multi-sector climate risks being developed by CSIRO in collaboration with Microsoft.

Your duties will include:

  • Research, design, develop and apply new approaches for assessing multisector climate risk.  These algorithms will address challenges concerning uncertainty quantification and propagation, probabilistic inference in high-dimensional systems, and modelling dynamics and causal relationships.
  • Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing, and further research.
  • Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering artefacts (e.g., papers, patents, code, and demos) suitable for publication in leading national and international venues.
  • Prototype reusable, publicly available code.

Location:  Sydney, NSW or Hobart, TAS
Salary:  AU$92k - AU$101k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:  Specified term of 3 years
Reference:  89103

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science or statistics. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and sound knowledge in any of the following fields: time series analysis, financial mathematics, mathematical economics, optimisation, statistics. Some familiarity with artificial intelligence and / or machine learning would be advantageous.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to publish research results, prepare reports and present the results of scientific investigations at national and international conferences and stakeholder meetings.
  • Experience solving problems using quantitative approaches on real-world data.
  • High level computational and programming skills (in Python, R, or C++) to build AI/ML models and conduct analyses.
