The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in engineering biological systems?
  • Contribute to the Quantum Technologies Future Science Platform
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The CERC Fellow is critical to each project team, bringing their quantum skills to bear on specific application domains. As such, the CERC Fellow will be working in a highly cross-disciplinary environment and be challenged to help create new capability inside CSIRO.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have an interest in industrial application of quantum technologies, in solving problems that may have real commercial value, and in making an impact to better the lives of Australians. These areas of focus represent the biggest challenge facing the evolution of “quantum technologies” into a bona fide industry: identifying applications where quantum advantage can be achieved.

Your duties will include:

  • Driving the research project in Quantum Sensing Modified Biosystems with broadly outlined objectives.
  • Literature searches, developing laboratory-based project work and productive collaborations with national and international partners.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Design of a biological moiety identifiable by quantum technologies as well as development or adaptation of a quantum sensing tools for living biological materials.
  • Working towards impact applications such as a multi-million dollar food sustainability and ethics issue in egg production, or detection/traceability of wild-release genetic biocontrol systems for invasive species.

Location: Geelong, VIC
Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 88137

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as engineering biological systems or quantum biology/physics. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience of genome engineering or transgenesis, quantum sensing of biological material, or developing engineering prototypes is also highly regarded.
  • Knowledge and experience working with biological material or biosensors.
