The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in physics, photonics, or similar?
  • Contribute to the Quantum Technologies Future Science Platform
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Quantum Technologies Future Science Platform (FSP) aims to establish and grow capacity in quantum technology research and development at CSIRO. The opportunity we are seizing leverages existing expertise while extending into new, uncharted areas of discovery in quantum science and technology.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in industrial application of quantum technologies, in solving problems that may have real commercial value, and in making an impact to better the lives of Australians. These areas of focus represent the biggest challenge facing the evolution of “quantum technologies” into a bona fide industry: identifying applications where quantum advantage can be achieved.

Your duties will include:

  • Developing and advancing technologies related to quantum communication from ground to aircraft and/or satellites.
  • Building relationships with partner organisations and keeping informed on progress in the field.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Recognising and exploiting opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research
  • Utilising design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects.

Location: Adelaide, SA
Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 82202

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as physics, photonics, or similar. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experimental expertise in optics, precision mechanical engineering, and/or high-speed electronics.
  • Strong mathematical background in data analysis.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally.
