The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in glyco-biology, immunology, and a desire to make a contribution to animal and livestock science?
  • Contribute to the Immune Resilience Future Science Platform
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This position will form part of the Immune Resilience Future Science Platform (FSP). The Immune Resilience FSP aims to harness the fundamental understanding of the immune system to develop novel strategies and platforms that will build resilience in animals to combat disease and parasite challenges.

The successful candidate will sit within CSIRO’s Livestock & Aquaculture program and undertake research that aims to enhance our understanding of how the glycome contributes to parasitic disease pathogenesis in animals. The results will help deliver novel approaches for animals to resist parasitic infection.

Your duties will include:

  • Undertaking research in glyco-proteomics, immunology, vaccinology, and parasitology including (but not limited to):
    • Mass spectrometry and glyco-proteomics
    • Native sample isolation and preparation from a range of parasites,
    • Protein and RNA extractions for downstream proteomic and transcriptome analysis
    • Peptide design and synthesis with targeted modifications
    • Glyco-peptide antigen preparation and carrier conjugation chemistry
    • Vaccine delivery development using novel bio-conjugation and delivery approaches
    • Immunological assessments using ELISA and in vitro parasite bioassay assessments
  • Working in a diverse and multi-disciplinary team with a high-level collegiate and respectful approach to help deliver combined and independent outcomes.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.

Location: Brisbane, QLD

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 88225

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as immunology, glyco-biology, animal science, or similar. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • A record of achievement using a selection of wet-lab technical skills in proteomics, glycomics, immunology, molecular biology, parasitology to solve complex problems in animal research.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry, glycan analysis, sample preparation, data acquisition and analysis.
  • Knowledge or expertise undertaking ‘omic’ data analysis and use of software packages and methodologies.
