The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD genome engineering or similar?
  • Contribute to rabbit population control using molecular genetic systems
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This project is in the field of genome engineering and involves a unique collaboration with one of Australia’s leading mouse genome engineering facilities at the University of Adelaide, and CSIRO’s Rabbit Biocontrol team at the Black Mountain laboratory in the ACT.

The successful candidate will design, develop and construct rabbit molecular genetic systems with the objective of population growth limitation (alternatives to classically viral biocontrol systems). This will include working with team members from the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), to adapt a CSIRO patented technology to gene delivery to the rabbit system.

Your duties will include:

  • To work with the Rabbit Biocontrol Team to develop reproductive technologies and access materials necessary to engineer the genome of the rabbit.
  • To adapt the methodologies of CSIRO’s sperm transfection assisted genome engineering (STAGE) technologies for application in the rabbit.
  • To undertake genetic and genomic analysis of the rabbit genome to identify targets for genetic biocontrol.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes – with a particular focus on opportunities in genome engineering and biocontrol systems.
  • Recognising and utilising opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research – particularly at the interface between animal and molecular systems with population and landscape modelling of biocontrol deployment.

Location: Canberra, ACT
Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 86888

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as, such as genome engineering or recombinant DNA techniques applied in animal systems, or similar. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated high level skills in molecular biology in particular genome engineering tools such as CRISPR and mammalian cell culture.
  • A strong knowledge of animal genetics such as mouse molecular genetics and genomics.
  • Experience with or a keen interest in transcriptomics.
