The Opportunity

  • Do you have a passion to improve crops and a PhD in a relevant field such as plant genetics, physiology or pathology?
  • Use cutting-edge techniques whilst working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Join our CSIRO Agriculture and Food Adaptive Traits team in Western Australia for this 3 year postdoctoral role

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

We are thrilled to be able to deliver on the commitment we made in our strategy to invest in frontier science with the CSIRO Agriculture & Food Winanga-y Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme. The word Winanga-y (pronounced win-na-gnay) is a cultural asset gifted by the Gomeroi Nation in Myall Vale to CSIRO's Agriculture and Food Business Unit to name the new Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme. Winanga-y means to understand, know, remember, and think.

The CERC Fellow will bring an impact lens to the problem of harnessing wild diversity for crop improvement. The CERC Fellow will map out and execute a genetic solution to a canola variety problem identified in consultation with industry. Using cutting edge approaches, the CERC Fellow will devise a workplan to rapidly transfer valuable genes from wild relative(s) into canola. This will include phenotyping a range of wild Brassica species, mining genomic resources for gene identification and interspecific crossing and/or gene editing to transfer target genes from the wild species into canola.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful genetic research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Communicating openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • In consultation with canola industry stakeholders, identifying a key canola industry problem and mapping out a pathway to deliver industry impact using a genetic solution.
  • Developing collaborative, multi-disciplinary networks to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.

Location: Floreat, Western Australia
Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as plant genetics, physiology or pathology. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in plant genetics, breeding, genomics and/or phenotyping.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • A sound history of publication in peer reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, grant applications or patents.
  • An ability and willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary team and to engage with the plant breeding industry.
