CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Australian e-health research centre (AEHRC) is CSIRO’s digital health research unit delivering innovation to the health system. It is the largest eHealth research group in Australia with more than 100 research scientists working with clinicians and industry to identify the clinical and/or health challenges. AEHRC is worldwide and unique in covering the full value chain from basic science through to clinical application and assessing their impacts on Australian and international health systems.

Within the AEHRC, the charter of the Transformational Bioinformatics Group is to develop novel bioinformatics solutions for research and industry using the latest in cloud and BigData infrastructure.

The CERC Fellow will join this group from the AEHRC and collaborate closely with external collaborators (including the Westmead Institute of Medical Research, Flinders University and Monash University) to innovate new technology for phage therapy, in conjunction with the MRFF Frontiers funded PhageAustralia project. The Phage Australia project aims to combat the global problem of antibiotic-resistant infections through phage therapy as an alternative to antibiotics. The CERC Fellow will invent technical solutions to consolidate disparate medical data on scalable cloud infrastructure, as well as develop novel machine learning approaches to predict bacterial susceptibility to specific phages. This work will lead to the creation of a scalable fit-for-purpose platform that supports the clinical role out of phage therapy in Australia.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Developing innovative concepts, theories, tools and techniques related to phage therapy and phage host interaction.
  • Producing high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals, client reports, blog posts, and granting of patents.
  • Recognising and exploiting opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
  • Utilising design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals, and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects.

Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as bioinformatics or data science. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience/familiarity with the principles of machine learning.
  • Practical experience with genome analytics of WGS and other ‘omics data types.
  • Evidence of advanced data analytics and programming capabilities in more than one language relevant for bioinformatics (e.g. Python, Java, C++, Scala, BASH, R, Julia).
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this role, you must be an Australian/New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian temporary resident currently residing in Australia and be able to commence in the role by August 2022.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent. Additional integrity checks may be required for specific roles which require security clearance for working with children, Australian Government cybersecurity requirements or other identified security roles.
