The Opportunity

  • Pursue research to advance sensor technologies with application to livestock welfare
  • Combine your ML/AI skills with your interests in biological science
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

CSIRO’s vision is to harness the ability of sensor technologies to classify and interpret animal behaviour in order to deliver an automated animal welfare assessment system. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be required to identify sensor technologies able to monitor animal welfare at critical stages of the animal supply chain, and design experiments to investigate the accuracy and suitability of these approaches in a commercial setting. They will also be required to define objective systems for assessment of animal welfare status and opportunities to automate this process together with setting up systems that aggregate welfare measures into an index or database that can be used to report on a whole of life welfare experience.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship facilitates collaboration and research across research programs, which together help develop strong research leadership and technical skills, while growing a broad scientific network with an innovation and impact focus. As such, this project will provide a unique opportunity to interconnect different disciplines and craft a novel research area.

Your duties will include:

  • Conducting and pursuing research to advance the state of the art in sensor technologies, data analytics, and automated compliance with application to enhance livestock welfare.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Liaising with industry stakeholders to identify opportunities for the application of sensor technologies to underpin livestock welfare metrics and to refine and optimise the technology for industry application.
  • Recognising and utilising opportunities for innovation, generating new theoretical perspectives, and progressing opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
  • Working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, to undertake scientific investigations and carrying out associated tasks under the guidance of Senior Research Scientists/Engineers.

Location: St Lucia (Brisbane), QLD
Salary: AU$89k – AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 75393

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in data science, sensor technologies, machine learning or related discipline or a doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in animal science or biological science with demonstrated experience in data science, sensor technologies, machine learning or related discipline.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in using any of the above disciplines in an area of biological science.
  • Knowledge of machine learning to interpret large datasets (ML/AI).
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • The ability to work and communicate effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary (including computer scientists, data scientists, ML modellers and animal scientists), potentially regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
