CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Aquaculture Genomics and Advanced Breeding

The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in quantitative/statistical genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or computational biology?
  • Contribute to the discovery of new genomics understanding in selected aquaculture species
  • Be part of the team improving the best practices for the use of genomics in the applied breeding domain

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

Genomics continues to rapidly advance biological knowledge across a range of diverse species and to revolutionise breeding activities for more sustainable, resilient and productive plants and animals. The development of genomic tools, datasets and knowledge for aquaculture species is rapidly advancing, and the implementation of genomic selection is a key area of interest for aquaculture industries.

This is driving a research need to attain detailed knowledge of genome structure and variation for target aquaculture species that can be coupled with custom built genomic tools and improved analytical methodologies to speed genetic gain and transform industry practise.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to the discovery of new genomics understanding in the areas of comparative genomics, functional annotation, analytical development and the application of new knowledge to advance applied breeding outcomes. The research opportunity spans the target finfish, oyster and prawn species that are the focus of commercial applied breeding programs operated by the CSIRO team.

Your duties will include:

  • Contributing to the development of innovative concepts, approaches and methods for the successful use of genomics information in advanced breeding applications.
  • Uncovering new biological information describing genomic structural differences, genome wide patterns of genetic variation and exploring the consequences of these differences on biological and breeding outcomes.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Recognising and exploiting opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progressing opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.

Location:  Hobart, TAS (preferred)
Salary:  AU$88k - AU$96k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:  Specified term of 3 years
Reference:  77997

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as quantitative/statistical genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or computational biology.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience in the management and manipulation of large genomics and sequence data sets.
  • An understanding of the use of genomics in applied breeding settings and an interest in the improvement of current approaches.
  • Programming experience in R or Python, or a demonstrated ability to learn computer languages easily.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
