CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this position, you will undertake research to develop new molecules with antiviral activity using fragment-based approaches directed at novel drug targets. While your focus will be on synthetic organic chemistry, you will join a team of scientists in the Biomedical Manufacturing Program undertaking a range of research including structural biology, biophysics, molecular cell biology and virology. 

• Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
• Assisting with directing fragment-based approaches against viral protein targets identified by other team members.
• Using rational drug design skills and in consultation with the team, proposing new synthetic targets to translate fragment hits into potent and selective small molecule binders.
• Planning and performing synthetic organic chemistry experiments to generate novel compounds.

• A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area such as medicinal chemistry and/or synthetic organic chemistry. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
• Demonstrated experience in synthetic organic chemistry techniques and planning routes to novel compounds.
• Proven experience in the isolation and characterisation of small molecules using techniques such as NMR, chromatography, MS, HPLC.
• A history of creatively solving synthetic organic chemistry problems. 
• High-level communication skills including the ability to present research outcomes at national and international conferences.
• A sound publication record in peer reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports or patents.
