The biggest biological threat to honey bees and pollination worldwide is Varroa mites. One way for Australia to prepare for this threat is to introduce and pre-emptively select for Varroa tolerance traits in the honey bee population. This requires an innovative genomics approach to develop robust biomarkers for these complex, multifactorial traits and facilitate genomic selection of Australian honey bees to retain Varroa tolerance in the absence of mites. In this role, you will design an innovative genomics strategy to develop molecular tools and phenotypic proxies that will contribute to the establishment of a robust honey bee breeding program in Australia.
