CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Honey Bee Genomics

The Opportunity
  • Design an innovative genomics strategy to develop molecular tools and phenotypic proxies
  • Contribute to the establishment of a robust honey bee breeding program in Australia.
  • Join CSIRO - Australia's premier science and technology research organisation.

The biggest biological threat to honey bees and pollination worldwide is Varroa mites. One way for Australia to prepare for this threat is to introduce and pre-emptively select for Varroa tolerance traits in the honey bee population. This requires an innovative genomics approach to develop robust biomarkers for these complex, multifactorial traits and facilitate genomic selection of Australian honey bees to retain Varroa tolerance in the absence of mites. In this role, you will design an innovative genomics strategy to develop molecular tools and phenotypic proxies that will contribute to the establishment of a robust honey bee breeding program in Australia.

Your duties will include:
  • Undertaking research on comparative genomics of Varroa tolerant honey bee stock imported to Australia, including identification of novel molecular mechanisms and biomarkers
  • Carrying out research investigations with originality, creativity and innovation
  • Recording, managing and analysing data using relevant domain data science techniques.
  • Utilising design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals, and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects

Location:  Canberra, ACT
Tenure:  Specified term of 3 years
Salary:   AU$86K – AU$94K + up to 15.4% superannuation
Reference:  67568

To be considered you will need:
  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area.
    • Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in either genome bioinformatics using next-generation sequencing technologies or in quantitative/population/evolutionary genetics, and good knowledge of the other discipline area.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and pursue novel research approaches.
  • Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to cooperate with others and collaborate with other teams to achieve objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently under minimal supervision and proven ability to meet performance deadlines during the course of the project
