CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Earth System Science

  • Are you a highly motivated recent (or soon-to-be) PhD graduate with an interest in the carbon cycle and the role of the terrestrial biosphere?
  • Work with CSIRO on regional and global GHGs Budgets
  • Kick-start your research career at Australia's premier research organisation

The Position:

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience. Postdoctoral fellows work closely with a leading Research Scientist in the field. The postdoctoral fellow will carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

As a postdoctoral fellow with CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere you will work with a team to study the role of the terrestrial biosphere in the regional (Australia) and global carbon budgets, and to develop comprehensive GHG budgets as part the new global assessment REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes (RECCAP2) of the Global Carbon Project.

Your duties will include:

Under the direction of senior research scientists and engineers:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Working on biospheric modelling (including with the Australia CABLE): multi model ensembles, attribution experiments, and upscaling observational data to continental and global scales.
  • Exploring new data sources (continental and global) for a spatial-temporal analysis including new satellite products, and inventory and flux data.
  • Producing high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in quality journals.
  • Recognising and exploiting opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progressing opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
  •

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Earth System Science, Applied Mathematics, Ecosystem Ecology, Global Change Biology, Environmental Sciences, Physics, or ChemistryPlease note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • Experience working with global/large scale biospheric modelling (e.g. DGVMs) in the context of the carbon cycle.
  • Demonstrated high level skills in complex spatial and temporal analysis of large datasets with commensurable knowledge of computer languages, and overall advanced knowledge of numerical methods in the context of environmental research.
  • High degree of understanding of the carbon cycle, particularly of land-atmosphere carbon fluxes and processes.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.
