Station Manager - Heron Island Research Station

Heron Island Research Station (HIRS) is part of the Faculty of Science at The University of Queensland. It is located on a small coral cay 80 km offshore from Gladstone and has been established for over 60 years. It has developed into Australia's largest, best equipped and most productive university-owned marine research station. The station caters to Australian and international researchers and educational groups, offering modern wet and dry laboratories, indoor and outdoor aquaria, a large animal holding tank, separate research and teaching laboratories, seminar facilities, a library, computer room and extensive boating and diving facilities. A team of ten staff members are available to provide scientific services, boating, diving, maintenance and housekeeping support. The Station operates 7 days per week, all year round (excluding shutdown over the Christmas period).

The role: The Station Manager is responsible for managing all operations of the HIRS under the broad direction of the Facilities Manager, Faculty of Science and in accordance with the policy and procedure framework of the University of Queensland. Key management areas include: Staffing; Budget and procurement; OH&S; Infrastructure & facilities; Regulatory compliance.

The Station Manager is also a key point of contact for new and existing users of HIRS and needs to display the highest levels of client service.

The person: Applicants should possess a relevant postgraduate degree (field based research) with extensive relevant management experience working in remote locations and /or in isolated communities will be an advantage.

Remuneration: This is a five year, full-time, fixed-term appointment at HEW Level 8. The remuneration package will be in the range AUD$92,811 - $104,214 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range AUD$108,589 - $121,930 p.a.).
