ABOUT THE ROLE 

This new position will work within a supportive team to deliver allocated initiatives to contribute to achievement of objectives, targets and outcomes within Moreland’s Waste and Litter Strategy, Plastic Wise Policy and Zero Carbon Moreland Action Plan. The role has specific focus on developing and delivering waste engagement, education, behaviour change and compliance pilots and interventions aiming to:

  • Measurably reduce contamination of kerbside recycling from select cohorts (e.g. multi-unit developments)
  • Reduce the environmental impact of single-use plastic within Moreland, by working to eliminate single-use plastic at festivals and events and within Council facilities (including leased and hired venues) and services, consistent with Council’s adopted Plastic Wise Policy 2018.
  • Support Council and our staff to lead by example in (corporate) waste management practices consistent with the waste hierarchy and circular economy principles.

Success in this role will contribute towards Council’s ambitious goals of zero waste to landfill by 2030 and a plastic-wise Moreland. 

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THIS ROLE 

  • Completion of a degree or diploma course in environmental management or science, sustainability, communications, education, social science, community engagement or demonstrated equivalent competencies gained through experience in these or related fields.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of recycling and waste issues and practices, with an understanding of recycling and waste education principles and methods.
  • Applied understanding of community engagement, facilitation, education and behaviour change theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated project management skills including project planning and implementation, time management, budget management and reporting, to ensure delivery of outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills with excellent written and verbal skills to prepare and deliver materials of a consistently high level.
