About the role:

An exciting one-year fixed term opportunity for a registered nurse to join the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit public health laboratory (MDU PHL) within the Peter Doherty Institute, to support the Victorian Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacterales (CPE) Cohort Study (CPECS), a research study investigating long term colonisation with CPE.

The incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the recruitment of eligible subjects, coordination and scheduling of specimen collection, conducting participant interviews, record keeping and coordination of ethics and other study reporting requirements. The Research Nurse may also have the opportunity to work across other projects and research activities at the MDU PHL.

MDU PHL is one of Victoria’s public health laboratories responsible for providing the highest quality microbiological services, including pathogen genomics to identify, investigate and control, protect and improve the public’s current and emerging public health threats posed by infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and biological agents of security concern.

About you:

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Suitably qualified Division 1 Registered Nurse with extensive relevant experience;

Skills and Experience required to fulfil the position:

  • A demonstrated understanding of the principles and practice of data and sample collection for research, and understanding of the research environment;
  • Ability to deal with a range of complex and sensitive issues and to work in a range of complex environments;
  • Experience in the collection of a wide-variety of pathology samples;
  • High-level interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to empathetically engage with study participants with a range of complex health needs;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member, manage priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to relate effectively with a range of people including study participants and project partners;
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team to develop and conduct research activities, preparation of documentation and contribute to reporting;
  • High level of proficiency in the use of standard application software such as the Microsoft Office suite;
  • Valid driver’s licence for site visits as required.

Desirable

  • Practical experience as a nurse in complex research environments
  • Experience in surveillance, epidemiology and data management or analysis

Special Requirements

Some flexibility in days and hours of work may be required to complete project activities
