About the role

This is a fixed term position for three years. The successful applicant will work with Dr Suzie Sheehy, PhD and Masters students and a range of local and international collaborators.  The vision of the Medical Accelerator Physics group is to develop novel accelerator technologies for application in the medical domain, with a primary focus on hadron therapy accelerators for protons and ions, including large-acceptance beamlines and gantries.  The group is also interested in novel radiotherapy accelerator technology for cancer care in challenging environments.

The successful candidate will work across disciplinary boundaries to design, implement and demonstrate novel accelerator physics concepts for medical applications.  This exciting opportunity will allow the candidate to take new ideas from physics concept to experimental demonstration in the newly created accelerator laboratory at the University of Melbourne.

About you

  • Completion (or near completion) of a PhD in Accelerator Physics or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, optimisation and simulation of particle accelerators or beamlines
  • Demonstrated experience in experimental physics
  • Demonstrated level of competence in Python, C++ or other relevant programming languages
  • A demonstrated aptitude for research, with a sound publication record in the relevant area, commensurate with experience and opportunities
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication
  • Ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships
  • Excellent interpersonal and both written and oral communication skills in English
  • Excellent ability to work co-operatively and positively in a multi-disciplinary research based team environment and liaise with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated excellent organisational skills to meet deadlines and bring projects to a timely completion
  • Experimental experience with particle accelerators, controls, diagnostics or beam characterisation, particularly in medical-related (radiotherapy or hadron therapy) accelerators
  • Awareness and interest in IP, commercial and innovation aspects of research and experience collaborating or working with relevant industry
  • Multidisciplinary experience, particulary between physics, medical and/or engineering domains
