About the opportunity

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music invites applications for the position of Jazz Lecturer: Equity in Jazz Team Leader to lead this program designed to encourage and support women and all gender marginalised people into a career in jazz through dedicated leadership and music development activities. This is an opportunity to pioneer and develop a program of teaching and performance activities that would support women and all gender marginalised jazz students and their professional goals that would/could include:

  • Targeted musician mentoring sessions
  • Masterclasses and workshops
  • Collaborative performance with students and industry professionals
  • Creating an identified jazz ensemble

 

The Jazz Lecturer: Equity in Jazz Team Leader will also be responsible for:

  • utilizing their extensive industry and community networks to benefit students and the wider Conservatorium - through collaboration with these networks to support and grow the engagement of gender diversity in jazz;
  • extending students' technical mastery of their chosen instrument or voice, and deepen their knowledge of repertoire and performance practice;
  • delivering lectures, tutorials and assignments that give students the scope to develop subject matter expertise in areas they are passionate about;
  • teaching music skills and music performance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels with an emphasis on jazz composition and arranging, but also encompassing principal study, jazz improvisation classes, jazz history, and ensemble classes;
  • helping to recruit women and gender marginalised jazz research students and/or projects making an important contribution to the research strengths of the school, including regular publications and performances;
  • actively work with student recruitment and audition process to develop more opportunities for young women and gender marginalized jazz musicians to study at the Conservatorium;
  • working with our Music Education department to find ways to promote and develop jazz program for young women and gender marginalised students in high schools;
  • actively contributing to faculty activities and academic administration;
  • working cooperatively within a team; and
  • applying their years of experience as a performer and touring musician to provide guidance tailored to students' abilities across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

About you

  • Masters in Music;
  • evidence of tertiary teaching experience in jazz related activities such as jazz composition, jazz harmony and arranging, jazz history, and jazz music performance;
  • evidence of extensive professional experience in the fields of either jazz composition and arranging, jazz performance or both;
  • evidence of an active research profile or published recordings;
  • strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively;
  • the ability to supervise postgraduate students.

Desirable for this appointment is:

  • a PhD in music (or related discipline);
  • demonstrated capacity to coordinate administrative functions relevant to the tertiary education environment.

 

About us

The Jazz course at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music is Australia's oldest and most highly regarded jazz program. Entry to it is by competitive audition and the standard of the student cohort is universally high. Students are able to study all aspects of jazz performance and the requisite skills that inform professional practice including jazz harmony and arranging, jazz ear training, jazz history, principal study and jazz analysis. There are four large ensembles and 15 small ensembles, and dedicated improvisation classes in which the jazz cohort participate. Many of the students who have passed through the jazz program are at the vanguard of the music scene both domestically and internationally.


At the Conservatorium of Music, women make up 20% of the undergraduate and postgraduate jazz programs. In the research report 'Skipping the Beat' on gender equality in music, the authors suggest that we should "Address gender bias in the Australian music industry by prioritising inclusivity and representation as core industry values". Kevin Hunt, Program Leader (jazz performance) Senior Lecturer in Jazz (piano, improvisation, ensemble) cites the biggest issue being the lack of women and gender marginalised people at professional performance and senior leadership level which contributes to low audition numbers. The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is eager to address this issue by employing an experienced lecturer in Jazz to establish this specialised program.
