About the opportunity 

This appointment is funded by a gift as the Garry and Susan Rothwell Chair in Architectural Design Leadership with a purpose to develop, through innovation in architecture and urbanism, the capacity of architectural design to improve people's quality of life.

This position will support and contribute to the broad research agenda of the inaugural Rothwell Co-Chairs, Lacaton & Vassal Architectes (2020–2022). Specifically, the position will explore complex urban redevelopment projects, from architectural, urban design, or other perspectives, with an emphasis on the potential for socially and environmentally optimistic outcomes. The position will work under the direction of an academic member of staff at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning to be determined.

The position will undertake research or scholarly activity contributing to the Lacaton & Vassal research agenda, including production of a program of independent and collaborative published works and a program of public engagement incorporating an international symposium. There is opportunity has project funding to travel to Lacaton & Vassal’s home studio annually where possible to advance collaborative research.

The Associate will inform research progress and maintain communications with the working group and other relevant stakeholders, and prepare academic papers, project briefs, progress reports, and media outputs.

The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in architecture, urban design, urban planning or a cognate discipline, completed in the past 5 years, and a track record of conducting independent research resulting in individual or collaborative publications of high quality in modes appropriate to the field of research.

We are looking for a Rothwell Chair Postdoctoral Research Associate who possesses below essential criteria:

  • a PhD degree in architecture, urban design, urban planning or a cognate discipline, completed in the past 5 years
  • a track record of conducting independent research resulting in individual or collaborative publications of high quality in modes appropriate to the field of research (which may include traditional academic publications as well as works oriented to a broader public)
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • excellent organisational and project management skills
  • ability to build relationships within and beyond the University
  • demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within and outside the University in a team to meet agreed deadlines and achieve project goals
  • experience in preparing and editing reports and/or publications, and experience in collaborative authorship.

and below desirable criteria:

  • experience in curating and coordinating academic and/or public events
  • experience with supervision of research students
  • ability to communicate in French.
