Translational Theranostics Research Officer

  • 12 month Fixed Term, part-time (number of days per week negotiable) with possible extension for another 12 months. Base salary $86K p.a pro rata plus superannuation

About the opportunity 

Sydney Vital is the Cancer Institute NSW funded Translational Cancer Research Centre (TCRC) with the centre’s office on the campus of the Royal North Shore Hospital and the University of Sydney’s Northern Clinical School of the Faculty of Medicine & Health. Sydney Vital is looking for a part-time Research Officer to join one of our three premier research “flagship” projects - Translational Theranostics. The role includes participation in the research activities undertaking core aspects of research work and contributing to analysis and key findings. The position will primarily involve generating data for further analysis gathered from patients with Neuroendocrine Tumours that have been treated at RNSH with a targeted radiolabelled peptide therapy as part of a Cancer Institute NSW trial. The centre is the largest treatment facility in NSW for this type of cancer.

The main responsibilities in this role will be to more deeply analyse pre-existing data. Data analysis will form a key part of the role and the successful incumbent will be expected to work with medical image data, perform statistical analysis of selected data sets and prepare clinical data for audits to determine patient outcomes. The successful applicant will be employed by the University of Sydney in this role.

  • tertiary qualifications in medicine or science with relevant experience in a related field. May have (or be working towards) completing further studies such as a Masters or PhD or have extensive specialist experience in the field of research.
  • experience in data entry and statistical analysis of biological/clinical data
  • introductory knowledge of computer programming and experience with relational databases
  • knowledge of privacy and confidentiality legislative requirements and the ability to work confidentially whilst exercising discretion and adhering to relevant organisational policies

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Highly developed skills in prioritisation and organisation are essential to manage a varied workload as will effective time management skills.

The Centre has been jointly funded by Cancer Institute NSW (CINSW) and the University of Sydney. Current Sydney Vital partner institutions include: University of Sydney, Macquarie University, Kolling Institute, University of Technology Sydney, Royal North Shore Hospital, Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) and Mater Hospital.

The goal of Sydney Vital is to develop a rich multi-disciplinary environment for translational cancer research from bench-top to bedside. Sydney Vital brings together a highly motivated group of experienced cancer researchers, both pre-clinical and clinical, along with surgeons, physicians, allied health and oncologists to undertake translational cancer research which will ultimately lead to improved survival and quality of life for cancer patients. It aims to develop a pipeline of preclinical and clinical research activities to achieve this.
