About the opportunity
The position requires broad engineering knowledge for the design, development and testing of novel mechatronic systems and integration across a variety of robotic platforms. Project management skills are required to manage multiple projects. Specialised skills in electronic, electrical and mechanical, design are required to meet complex and often conflicting design requirements.
Reporting to the Engineering co-ordinator the position is be responsible for providing mechanical, electronic and embedded software support for contract research and development (R&D) projects for ACFR. The position will:
- Provide expert technical advice on projects using their knowledge of project and technical management tools
- Provide technical research support and assistance to researchers, students and other technical staff working in the laboratory
- Support field trials by preparation in the laboratory and then in the field
- Write and manage technical and user documentation in relation to electronic work
- Ensure the laboratory is compliant with Workplace Health and Safety requirements.

- A tertiary degree in Electrical/Mechanical/ /Mechatronic Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training
- Experience in electronics design including PCB and wiring layout
- Experience in imbedded system design and knowledge of system control software
- Experience in preparing project budgets
The Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) is based in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME) at The University of Sydney, and is dedicated to the research, development, application and dissemination of field robotics principles. The ACFR is the largest robotics and automation research group in Australia and one of the largest of its kind in the world. The ACFR is also a partner of the CRC iMOVE and the multidisciplinary Sydney Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (SIRIS) which is dedicated to the development, application and dissemination of robotics and intelligent systems in areas of societal importance including transportation, primary industries, healthcare, environment, emergency services, the workplace and at home.
