Postdoctoral Research Associate in Medical Imaging

About the opportunity 

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work as part of an international collaboration between the University of Sydney and the University of California Davis.  In this role you will support the development of a novel preclinical imaging system that enables simultaneous brain imaging and behavioural analysis of conscious, freely moving mice. This work is expected to fill an important technology gap in behavioural neuroscience and ultimately contribute to a better understanding of the biological mechanisms underpinning deficits in learning and motor function that occur in brain disorders, such as dementia and depression. The project is based in Sydney where you will work closely with Steven Meikle and Andre Kyme and have the opportunity to collaborate with members of the Cherry lab at UC Davis.

In this role you will:

  • build and characterise novel detector modules and a complete PET (positron emission tomography) scanner prototype
  • integrate the PET scanner with a motion-controlled gantry and motion tracking technology to perform motion-corrected imaging of freely moving animals
  • validate the entire system using phantoms and real subjects
  • assist with the supervision of PhD and honours students
  • present the outcomes of this work at national and international conferences and publish in relevant quality journals

  • relevant tertiary qualifications, including a PhD in a relevant area of physics or engineering
  • experience in algorithm development and data analysis methods, especially related to medical imaging

  • excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • demonstrated ability to manage workflows and multiple complex projects and meet deadlines
  • experience in electronics and hardware development, detector instrumentation or PET research is highly desirable.
