  • 12 month Fixed term, full-time contract, base salary $67K plus leave loading and 12.5% superannuation

About the opportunity 

We are in a period of exciting and significant investment in our Faculty of Medicine and Health and in order to deliver on the University’s ambitious strategic plan, we are looking for a Laboratory Assistant to join the Kolling Institute.

As the Laboratory Assistant working within the Kolling Institute Tumour Bank, you will be responsible for providing effective technical support in the laboratory including collection and processing of specimens, database maintenance, general maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment and routine tests and checks. Through initiative and judgment, you will strive to drive specific results and outcomes and lift the capability of the research function and drive efficiencies associated with day-to-day laboratory operations.

You will be responsible for:

  • providing research support and assistance to staff and students using the research/clinical laboratory.
  • assistance in reporting and documentation for the work area.
  • maintaining the laboratory workplace so that the research, learning and teaching requirements of the work area are met

About you

  • completed relevant training and is certified to work in a laboratory, with a willingness to undertake further studies to better develop their skills in laboratory techniques/methods
  • intermediate to advanced computer skills, including storing research data appropriately in databases and/or statistical analysis programs, and extracting relevant reporting and/or analysis
  • sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment including experience in working with hazardous substances with well-rounded experience in implementing safety procedures relevant to the laboratory
  • demonstrated understanding of privacy issues surrounding tumour banking
  • proven ability to apply theoretical knowledge and techniques to meet key accountabilities

About us

The Kolling Institute Tumour Bank is comprised of  breast, gynaecological, upper gastrointestinal,  neurological, endocrine and colorectal tumours. This bank contains tumour (and sometimes adjacent normal) tissue, blood and clinical information, collected with informed consent from patients undergoing surgery for the removal of tumour tissue. In addition, we house a Healthy Volunteers serum and EDTA whole blood bank, are a collection site for the INOVATe Study, based at the Westmead Institute and the Sydney 1000 Bowel Cancer Study.
