About the opportunity 

Reporting to the Laboratory Research Director, The Brain Cancer Group (TBCG) and Bill Walsh Translational Cancer Research Laboratory, the Biobank Officer provides essential technical support for the processing of Biobank / Tumour Bank specimens. This includes obtaining patient’s consent in the campus hospital, retrieving specimens following collection, processing specimens for storage in the laboratory and data entry. Data entry includes specimen details, patient demographics and clinical information as it becomes available. The position is newly created and will assist TBCG laboratory researchers with their translational research.

• Relevant training and is certified to work in a laboratory or hospital environment, with a willingness to further develop their skills. Venepuncture experience / certification is desirable but not essential.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to communicate with all levels of health care team, researchers and respectfully with patients.
• Keen attention to detail and confidentiality of clinical data.
• Sound working knowledge and awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment.

This position is funded by The Brain Cancer Group (TBCG; previously known as Sydney Neuro-Oncology Group), a charitable organisation based at North Shore Private Hospital that raises funds for brain cancer research as well as patient and carer support and education. TBCG was instrumental in establishing the collection of brain tissues for the Kolling Tumour Bank. It is the largest bank of frozen brain tumour tissue in Australia.
