Team Leader in Cellular Pharmacology

  • 3-year Full-Time Fixed Term position, with the possibility of further extensions up to 3 years and base salary $104 - $147k p.a (depending on appointment at Level B or C) plus superannuation

About the opportunity 

The Team Leader in Cellular Pharmacology will oversee studies of cannabinoid action on molecular drug targets in mammalian cells and cellular disease models. The successful candidate will work alongside the Lambert Initiative leadership team and Academic Director to achieve the strategic aims of the Lambert Initiative, which is to develop safe and effective cannabinoid-based medicines. They would be encouraged to build their own team and provide academic leadership and supervision in the portfolio of research undertaken by the cellular pharmacology laboratory.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Investigating the cellular pharmacology of cannabinoids, and related molecules, on specific target receptors, ion channels and enzymes implicated in epilepsy and other diseases.
  • Culture, transfect and test cell lines expressing recombinant human and rodent drug targets including receptors, ion channels and enzymes.
  • Management of the cell culture laboratory which contains Flexstation, BSCII and incubators.
  • Oversee the expansion of the current cell culture facility and the introduction of new cellular techniques and platforms which may include “disease in a dish” models.
  • Routine liaison with various other groups within the Lambert Initiative such as the in silico, medicinal chemistry and in vivo pharmacology teams.
  • Writing of and contributing to research proposals, protocols and scientific papers
  • Ordering of laboratory supplies and oversee the maintenance and servicing of key laboratory equipment and infrastructure.
  • Participate in research meetings.
  • Monitoring laboratory compliance with WH&S (particularly biochemical safety) and the handling of drugs, chemicals and GMOs.
  • Contribute to supervision of Honours and PhD students
  • Presentations on behalf of the Lambert Initiative at local, national and international events.

About you

  • A BSc (Honours) or equivalent and PhD in Pharmacology or closely-related discipline
  • Extensive experience in conducting cellular pharmacology research, with a strong publication track record in this area
  • Proficiency in biochemistry and molecular biology techniques
  • Experience in the management of a laboratory and in the development of new techniques
  • Ability to show leadership skills and good teamwork in a complex multidisciplinary setting
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Experience with research student supervision or co-supervision
