About the opportunity 

The Research Informatics Manager is a senior leadership role in the Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH), a University Core Research Facility serving academics and researchers across all faculties. The Research Informatics Manager will manage the program for supporting researchers across the University, including Medicine and Health Sciences, in their data science needs, and responsibility for building research relationships and opportunities for the University in this key strategic area. The Research Informatics Manager will have oversight of service delivery, project governance and implementation of key aspects of strategy under the Sydney Informatics Hub activities.  The Research Informatics Manager will report to the Director of SIH.

• Tertiary education (preferably to PhD level) in a computational area of study (data science, computer science, computational statistics, engineering, physics, biology, for example).
• Experience in identifying and influencing critical stakeholders and development of a portfolio of internal and external relationships leading to mission oriented collaboration.
• Demonstrated client management, senior stakeholder relationship, group advocacy, and strategic planning skills.  Awareness and demonstrated skills in dealing with organisational politics.
• A demonstrated ability to lead an engineering team to together deliver bespoke software tools, data services and data products.
• A demonstrated understanding of modern data science methods and familiarity with statistical or machine learning techniques.
• A deep understanding of modern data science software and tools, from high performance computing to cloud computing, information systems and the many existing commercial products used for data management and analytics.
• A deep knowledge of modern data-centric programming languages including python, R, and development languages including C++ or Java.
• Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to apply appropriate management strategies and communication to maintain high levels of motivation and productivity, giving feedback for development purposes and providing support for improvement.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, evidenced by high-level reporting, presentation and negotiation abilities and the capacity to identify and influence critical stakeholders to gain support for complex proposals/ideas.
• A proven track record of developing, maintaining and motivating high performance teams; building functional capability through individual development and succession planning; implementing training, coaching, mentoring and relevant development strategies within the broader team, experience managing and resolving a diverse range of HR issues.
• Proven ability to anticipate problems, develop appropriate solutions based on thorough evaluation and interpretation and defend conclusions with reasoned arguments.
• Preferably with experience in the application of data science in Health.

The Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH) addresses the opportunity presented by the unparalleled growth in the quantity and variety of data driving progress in all areas of academia. The opportunity exists to access and make effective use of data across all disciplines, from new discoveries in science and health, to developing a better understanding of individuals and society, to driving better outcomes for business and government. SIH’s primary aim is to develop the capacity to support the use of data science to promote discovery for all disciplines in the university; assisting in data access and management, providing support in the use of open-source and proprietary software for generating data visualisations and data understanding. SIH develops new research, technology and tools to support advanced uses of data, including in science and health, offering the opportunity for the university to build an exciting new research specialisation. SIH also provides the opportunity to train the University’s researchers in the effective use of data analytics and informatics methods.
