About us

The University of Sydney is committed to investing in and driving a culture of research excellence, as described in the University’s Strategic Plan 2016-2020, with the aim of ensuring that all of our academic staff are enabled to pursue and produce their best work possible, including tackling the most difficult questions in their fields, publishing in the highest quality places, working with the best partners both inside and outside the sector and addressing the major challenges our communities face.

The University is implementing several initiatives to achieve this goal, including launching the Sydney Research Excellence Initiative, which will finance our research infrastructure plan. The University’s Decadal Plan for Major Research Infrastructure sets out an ambitious program of rolling investment in a number of Core Research Facilities over the next period that will benefit all of our faculties, including the natural and physical sciences, the life sciences, creative arts, the humanities and social sciences.

A Core Research Facility is a centralised, shared capability spanning multiple faculties, providing access to high-end research infrastructure and offering a range of related services to assist researchers with specialist applications. The facilities serve as focal points of research activity, bringing together a critical mass of researchers from diverse disciplines, while providing the means to better manage and sustain high-end research infrastructure to deliver quality research outcomes, particularly in areas of strategic priority.

The Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH) addresses the opportunity presented by the unparalleled growth in the quantity and variety of data driving progress in all areas of academia. The opportunity exists to access and make effective use of data across all disciplines, from new discoveries in science and health, to developing a better understanding of individuals and society, to driving better outcomes for business and government. SIH’s primary aim is to develop the capacity to support the use of data science to promote discovery for all disciplines in the university; assisting in data access and management, providing support in the use of open-source and proprietary software for generating data visualisations and data understanding. SIH develops new research, technology and tools to support advanced uses of data, including in science and health, offering the opportunity for the university to build an exciting new research specialisation. SIH also provides the opportunity to train the University’s researchers in the effective use of data analytics and informatics methods.

Since our inception 160 years ago, the University of Sydney has led to improve the world around us. We believe in education for all and that effective leadership makes lives better. These same values are reflected in our approach to diversity and inclusion, and underpin our long-term strategy for growth. We’re Australia's first university and have an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. Across our campuses, we employ over 6000 academic and non-academic staff who support over 60,000 students.

We are undergoing significant transformative change, which brings opportunity for innovation, progressive thinking, breaking with convention, challenging the status quo, and improving the world around us.
